Cross-Connection Control & Backflow Prevention Program
A cross-connection is any physical link between the RCLWA potable (drinking) water system and a source of potential contamination or pollution, such as irrigation systems, fire sprinkler systems, chemical or industrial process lines, or other equipment connected directly to the water supply.
Protecting Our Water from Backflow
A cross-connection happens when drinking water lines come into contact with non-drinking water sources, such as pools, irrigation systems, or hose bibs. Without protection, water can flow backward into the system—a problem called backflow—bringing contaminants with it.
Why This Matters
- Keeps drinking water safe from pollution or contamination.
- Required by state law for certain properties.
- Protects every household in the community.
Requirements for Customers
- Backflow prevention devices must be installed on irrigation, commercial, fire sprinkler systems, or multi-unit lines where required.
- Devices must be tested every year by a certified tester (AWWA or ABPA approved).
- Passing test results must be submitted to RCLWA.
- Failed tests or repairs must be corrected promptly and retested.
